Aboriginal communities to co-design Healing Forums

24-June-2016

A series of forums across NSW will give Aboriginal communities the opportunity to discuss the need for healing informed practices with government agencies.

Expressions of interest are now open to Aboriginal communities who would like to co-design an Opportunity Choice Healing Responsibility Empowerment (OCHRE) forum.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Leslie Williams said up to six forums will be planned over the coming year.

These forums flow from the ongoing conversations between Aboriginal people and the NSW Government about how we can best support community led healing,” Mrs Williams said.

The forums, supported by Aboriginal Affairs and the Healing Foundation, will provide an opportunity for Aboriginal communities to engage directly with government and non-government agencies.

Recognising the impact of trauma on ourselves, our families and communities is the first step towards healing from the intergenerational effects of policies like the Stolen Generations, and this will be covered through the forums,” Healing Foundation CEO Richard Weston said.

Expressions of interest are open to Aboriginal communities in NSW where there is broad community interest and readiness to discuss healing, and where Aboriginal leaders are leading community healing.

Expressions of interest close on 31 August 2016.
