NAIDOC event in Warren honours Elders and their resilience

12-March-2024

A NAIDOC Grant provided by Aboriginal Affairs NSW supported an Aboriginal organisation in Warren to run an Elders Olympics event to celebrate NAIDOC Week in 2023.

The grant allowed Warren Local Aboriginal Land Council (WLALC), located on Wayilwan Country, to hold the event, which included basketball shooting and ring, bean bag and footy tosses. The event also featured an Aboriginal flag raising ceremony and a barbeque lunch for Elders.

“Our Elder-focused event provided the opportunity for our Elders to recount their history with each other; which is the history of our people and Community,” said Jodie Redman, CEO of WLALC.

“Being able to hold an event that celebrated our Elders was an honour.”

“Many of the Elders have lived in Warren for most if not all of their lives. They raised families on the Beemunnel Reserve, which the WLALC owns and manages on behalf of the Aboriginal community.”

“Our Elders weren't crushed or distorted by the policies of extermination, biological absorption and assimilation,” said Jodie. “They are healthy, vital and loving people. They represent the strength of our people.”

Applications for NAIDOC Grants for 2024 are open now and community groups across NSW are invited to apply.

The theme for NAIDOC Week in 2024 is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. Applicants can apply for grants of $500 to $3,000 (excluding GST) for the hosting of activities and events during NAIDOC Week that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, and align with the 2024 NAIDOC Week theme.
