NSW-based Aboriginal language stakeholders are being invited to provide their insight that will inform the Aboriginal Languages Trust’s five-year Strategic Plan.
The Trust will consult with Aboriginal language centres and organisations, peak Aboriginal bodies, government agencies and other community language stakeholders, on its proposed values, goals, and focus areas.
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Don Harwin said that consultation will be a key element in supporting the Trust to ensure that Aboriginal languages have the ability to thrive across the State.
“As one of the targets of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, we are determined to see the learning and use of Aboriginal languages grow across NSW,” said Mr Harwin.
“It is crucial that the Trust’s plan is informed by Aboriginal community voices, as custodians of their own languages, and we welcome their wisdom and advice,” he said.
Aboriginal Languages Trust Board Chairperson Jason Behrendt said that initial consultation will begin in March 2021 with surveys, COVID-safe meetings, and other conversations facilitated across the range of language stakeholders in NSW.
“We have a passionate community and their knowledge and support will be invaluable in our efforts to increase opportunities for Aboriginal languages,” Mr Behrendt said.
“Their voices will guide our plan and ultimately, the approach we take as a Trust.”
