Reconciliation Week 2021

Reconciliation Week marks a significant period of the year where we come together as a nation to learn about our shared histories and the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures for all Australians.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Don Harwin said that Reconciliation Week 2021 marked twenty years since the 2000 Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk, and importantly recognises the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum on 27 June and Mabo Day on 3 June.

Mr Harwin encourages all Australians to embrace their relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the role we all play in building reconciliation that values First Nation’s people’s histories, culture and their futures.

“In the coming week, I encourage everyone to reflect on how they can influence meaningful change across NSW. This is an important step to recognise how we can all contribute to reconciliation,” Mr Harwin said.

“We acknowledge the Stolen Generations and pay our respects to those we have lost. We give special recognition to all survivors today and the work they do to bring their stories to light that assist in the deeper understanding of the past.

It is their voice, their stories and their truth.” Mr Harwin said National Sorry Day is a day of deep commemoration, reflection and truth-telling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. “Truth telling is important, and the recently opened, ‘Unsettled’, at the Australian Museum is part of this conversation.

I encourage all Australians to visit this free exhibition which I hope will play a key role in promoting reconciliation.” Mr Harwin said.

As part of National Reconciliation Week, the 15th Annual Indigenous Veterans Commemoration Ceremony will be also held this Friday (28 May) to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women.

All NSW Government buildings will fly the Australian and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags during National Reconciliation Week. The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June.
