With the 47th NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Koori Knockout approaching this weekend, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Sarah Mitchell, is encouraging fans and spectators to stay safe, plan ahead and enjoy the competition.
This year, more than 130 teams from as far west as Broken Hill will travel to Sydney for four days of fiercely contested, world class rugby league; giving communities the opportunity to gather, be social and barrack for their hometown team.
With teams travelling from all over NSW to attend the Koori Knockout, Mrs Mitchell said it is a perfect occasion to encourage conversations about safety, particularly on our roads.
“The Koori Knockout is an important opportunity for communities to put their pride on display and showcase local talent and skills – on and off the field,” Mrs Mitchell said.
“But as families hit the road to travel to Sydney, it is a timely reminder that in 2016, 24 Aboriginal people lost their lives and that’s 24 too many,” Mrs Mitchell said.
“The NSW Government is supporting and promoting the safety of our Aboriginal communities at this year’s Koori Knockout through travel subsidies and additional public transport options – because the best part of this weekend will be everyone returning home to their families safely.”
The grants are part of a $160,000 commitment from the NSW Government to the Koori Knockout, which includes promotion of the Bring the Mob Home Safely campaign as well as funding for shuttle buses to transport supporters between Town Hall and Leichhardt Oval every day of the tournament.
