New memorials in memory of victims of Bowraville murders

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Victor Dominello today announced that the NSW Government would provide funding to install new memorials and plaques in Bowraville dedicated to the memory of Colleen Walker-Craig, Evelyn Greenup and Clinton Speedy-Duroux.
Mr Dominello said that existing memorials, dedicated to the three children who were victims of the Bowraville murders in 1990 and 1991, would also be upgraded.
Having visited Bowraville in December and met with the families of the victims, I saw firsthand the ongoing determination of the community to honour and remember the lives of Colleen, Evelyn and Clinton,†Mr Dominello said.
I am pleased the NSW Government has been able to work in partnership with the community to provide $32,000 to construct and upgrade these memorials, which forms an important part of the healing process for the families and the broader Aboriginal community.
Respectful commemoration is an important part of the healing process but I understand that there is much more which needs to be done to redress the scars of injustice felt by the community. I am committed to supporting the families on that journey.
Mr Dominello said following close consultation with the families, the NSW Government will fund the following works:
- Three existing plaques currently located at Bowraville Memorial Park will be removed, having been erected without proper community consultation, and replaced with a new structure which will provide a sheltered memorial and place for reflection.
- A plaque dedicated to Colleen Walker-Craig will be installed at Micks Retreat Picnic Area on the banks of the Bonville River at Sawtell.
- A plaque dedicated to Clinton Speedy-Duroux will be installed at Millbrook Memorial Park, Poleworth Street, Tenterfield which will complement the yarning circle is also located at that site.
- A plaque dedicated to Evelyn Greenup will be installed on North Congarinni Road Bowraville.
This represents the first outcome in response to the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice’s Final Report on the Inquiry into the Family Response to the Murders in Bowraville which was handed down in November 2014, Mr Dominello said.
It fulfils Recommendation 15 of the Committee calling for the beautification or establishment of memorial sites in consultation with the community.
The NSW Government's formal response to the Report is due in May 2015.
