Accord set to deliver solutions for Aboriginal land owners in Eden

18-October-2017

In a first for NSW, tourism and other business opportunities in Eden could be fast-tracked for Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council, with the signing of an accord that guarantees cooperation and collaboration.

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell said the accord will prioritise the determination of existing land claims through the negotiation of an Aboriginal Land Agreement (ALA).

In addressing impediments to economic participation by local Aboriginal people, the accord has identified opportunities for land management, tourism, business and capacity development in the Eden area.

The Eden Land and Economic Participation Accord was signed at Parliament House today by the Minister along with Mr BJ Cruse, Chairperson Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. Bega Valley Shire Council is also a signatory to the Accord

NSW Government agencies committed in the accord are the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), Department of Industry: Lands and Forestry, and the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC), as well as Aboriginal Affairs.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell said the NSW Government is committed to resolving issues and improving outcomes in Aboriginal communities. This accord is the first of many likely positive outcomes under the authority of Aboriginal Affairs Solution Brokerage mandate.

The Solution Brokerage mandate sees government agencies and non-government organisations working together on practical solutions to issues that tend to ‘fall between the cracks.’
