$1.5 million to boost Aboriginal literacy levels

11-November-2022

The NSW Government has today announced $1.5 million in funding toward the Literacy for Life Foundation to lift adult literacy levels in Aboriginal communities across the State.

The funding will deliver the Aboriginal Adult Literacy Campaign, delivering community-led outcomes in line with local community needs and issues they’ve identified.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said this funding would empower and drive tangible change for Aboriginal communities across NSW.

“The NSW Government is committed to investing in outcomes for all Aboriginal people and communities to prosper and thrive across our State,” Mr Franklin said.

“This funding will support an Aboriginal-led initiative aiming to lift adult literacy while providing the resources to address the issues that they have identified as important to them.

“This investment, which builds on the historic $716 million announced in the 2022/23 State Budget, will further shift the dial on Closing the Gap and deliver positive outcomes for Aboriginal people across NSW.”

Literacy for Life Executive Director Jack Beetson said this additional funding would allow Literacy for Life to make a significant impact in Aboriginal communities across the State.

“Many of our adult students sign up to improve their reading and writing so they can assist their children’s education,” Mr Beetson said.

“This funding will make an enormous difference by lifting literacy levels in Aboriginal communities.”

Maddy Boney from Collarenebri completed the Literacy for Life Foundation program and said it significantly increased her mental health.

“Once I completed the Literacy for Life program, I felt on top of the world and I’m a lot happier. I can read and write better and I feel more confident,” Ms Boney said.
