NSW Government signs statewide accord with Aboriginal Leaders

28-Feb-2019

A landmark agreement has been signed between regional Aboriginal Alliances and the NSW Government.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell said the Accord with the New South Wales Coalition of Aboriginal Regional Alliances (NCARA) reflects a joint commitment to work together to support and improve outcomes for Aboriginal people.

“The Accord aims to bring the groups together to positively address issues faced by Aboriginal young people and Aboriginal children,” Ms Mitchell said.

Ms Mitchell said the NCARA Accord, negotiated with the Chairs of the eight Regional Alliances, represents the first multi-regional agreement under Local Decision Making.

Chairperson of the NSW Coalition of Regional Aboriginal Alliances Des Jones welcomed the agreement.

“Aboriginal community voices are finally being heard and valued by the NSW Government,” he said.

Ms Mitchell commended the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Regional Alliances for identifying two priority areas to work in partnership with the NSW Government: the reduction of Aboriginal young people in detention and improving outcomes for Aboriginal children in the first five years of their lives.

“Through this Accord, the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Regional Alliances and the NSW Government are seeking to ensure that the voices of Aboriginal communities are heard in the design, delivery and implementation of services and projects,” Ms Mitchell said.
