The Aboriginal Languages Bill passed both houses of Parliament and was assented by the Governor on 24 October 2017, making it law.
Now that the Bill has become law, the Aboriginal Languages team are currently planning the next phase of the Bill, which includes forming an Aboriginal Languages Establishment Advisory Group to work on the structure and operation of the Aboriginal Languages Trust and strategic plan.
A call for Expression of Interests (EOI) to be part of the Aboriginal Languages Establishment Advisory Group will open soon, so please keep an eye on Koori Mail, the Aboriginal Affairs NSW (AANSW) website and through your networks for the opportunity to apply.
Conversations with Aboriginal communities will continue to guide the development of the Aboriginal Languages Trust and the future direction of Aboriginal languages in NSW in the first half of 2018. Please keep an eye on the website for more details.
An intergovernmental working group will also be formed to administer completion of the strategic plan and the distribution of resources. It is envisioned that this group will have members from federal and state government departments and Aboriginal peak bodies.
Aboriginal Affairs NSW (AANSW) would like to thank all our community stakeholders and those who participated in the consultations for their assistance in the Bill becoming law.
